IOGF Feeding Program in Schools: A Step Towards Better Health and Learning
Infinit-O Group Foundation (IOGF) recently concluded its feeding program at Fourth Estate Elementary School which aimed at improving the Body Mass Index (BMI) of 50 selected students. This initiative, which ran from November 2023 to May 2024, was designed not only to address malnutrition but also to highlight the crucial role of proper nutrition in enhancing student learning and overall academic performance.
The core objective of the program was to improve the BMI levels of the 50 students for school year 2023. The beneficiaries were carefully selected based on their nutritional needs, focusing on those who were underweight and / or stunted. The feeding program consisted of serving healthy lunch meals per day based on the Pinggang Pinoy food model of the Department of Health throughout the school year along with multivitamins.
IOGF ensured that the lunch meals are prepared based on a menu cycle, emphasizing the need for vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. Regular check-ins, which included height, weight, and BMI monitoring, were conducted monthly to track the progress of each student.
At the end of the program, remarkable progress was observed. The average BMI of the beneficiaries increased significantly, with 75% of the first batch of 25 students moving from malnourished or underweight status to a healthier range while 54% of the second batch of additional 25 students achieved normal BMI range. The program’s success was evident not only in the students’ physical development but also in their academic performance and classroom engagement.
In terms of academic performance, average 1st grading GPA of 50 students increased to 3.77% by the 4th grading period.
IOGF will continue its feeding program on the same school for SY 2024 but potentially increasing the number of beneficiaries to 250. This feeding program demonstrated that improving children’s nutrition is a key factor in their academic success. Proper nutrition is not just a matter of health—it is essential to learning and growth.
